ABOUT GIT:



The Gem and Jewelry Institute of Thailand (Public Organization) is the governmental organization in the form of a public organization in accordance with the Public Organization Act B.E. 2542 and was established in compliance with the Royal Decree on Establishment of the Gem and Jewelry Institute of Thailand (Public Organization) B.E. 2546. The establishment was published in the Royal Gazette on December 31st , 2003. The institute is under the supervision of Minister of Commerce.


The Gem and Jewelry Institute of Thailand (Public Organization) has been administrated through its Executive Board which was set up according to the Royal Decree of the institute’s establishment (Section 15). The Board includes 11 members as follows:

Chairman selected from experts in gem and jewelry industry by the Cabinet

4 members of the Board by their positions (a representative from Ministry of Commerce, a representative from the Department of Nature and Environment, a representative from the Ministry of Industry and a representative from the Budget Office)

Expert Members (up to 5 persons) appointed by the Cabinet

Director of the institute serves as a member of the Board and the secretary of the Board.
After having been nominated by Director Selection Committee, during the 2nd Board Meeting of 2005 on February 14th, 2005, Mrs. Wilawan Atichat was appointed the Director of the institute by the Board. The resolution has been effective since March 1st, 2005.

VISION:

"The institute aims to serve as the principal institute to develop, promote and support the Thai gem and jewelry industry to be able to compete in the global market."



MISSION:

Analyze, inspect, grade, standardize and assure the quality of gems, jewelry and precious metals productions in order to build the confidence in the quality of Thai gem and jewelry in international market.

Research on and develop gem and jewelry comprehensively in line with the industry's demand.

Improve the personnel's quality to meet the demand of the gem and jewelry business and industry.

Establish the in-depth database on gem and jewelry for data dissemination to the industrial sector.

OBJECTIVES(in accordance with Article 7, Section 1 of the Royal Decree)


Promote and develop the gem and jewelry industry for its supreme operability in the global market.

Represent the principal institute of the nation in researching on, inspecting and assuring the quality of gem, jewelry and precious metals.

Encourage and improve the personnel in the gem and jewelry industry in order to meet the demand of the gem and jewelry industry.

Serve as the information center for the gem and jewelry industry to provide the service on data dissemination and public relations for the gem and jewelry industry to be steadfast and able to compete in any environment in the global market.



RESPONSIBILITY(in accordance with Article 8, Section 1 of the Royal Decree)


Propose policies and plans in gem and jewelry industry development.

Research, examine gem, jewelry and precious metals and issue their quality certificates.

Provide training for government officials, entrepreneurs and general public in order to increase their knowledge and skill in gem and jewelry industry.

Collect, analyze and synthesize the information and statistics in order to build the gem and jewelry database.

Coordinate and establish agreement and collaboration with domestic and international organizations according to the objectives of the institute.




SERVICES:


GIT's CIBJO registered laboratory (officially accredited by the World Jewellery Confederation since May 2000) has several highly experienced gemologists and is equipped with the world-most advanced instruments. Its gem testing services include

Distinguishing natural, synthetic and imitation gemstones

Analyzing the enhancement methods of gemstones

Distinguishing natural, seawater cultured pearls and freshwater cultured pearls; pearl treatments

Distinguishing natural, synthetic and imitation diamonds

Identifying treatment types of diamonds

Ruby & Sapphire grading

Diamond grading

Determining Gemstone’s country of origin especially rubies, sapphires and emeralds

Identifying the variety of jade and quality enhancement method applied

Laser inscription on gemstone girdle

Gem and Jewelry Information Center has a major responsibility for doing researches as well as gathering and analyzing information about domestic and international gem and jewelry markets to build a database for Thai gem and jewelry entrepreneurs as well as governmental and private organizations concerned. The center offers an online database on the http://www.git.or.th website and also provide information through seminars, academic reports, printed media as well as the Gem and Jewelry Library which is considered a self-access learning center.

Marketing Database:


The online gem and jewelry database is one of the Information Center's important tools to provide in-depth information about the gem and jewelry industry so that Thai entrepreneurs can use the information for their production and marketing strategy planning. The center hopes such information enable them to manufacture products that meet consumers' needs, to adjust strategies to changing business environment and to avoid disadvantages that may occur. The online gem and jewelry database is available for public use, free of charge.

Academic Seminars:


Academic seminar is a way that the Information Center uses to publicize academic papers and marketing researches on the gem and jewelry industry in potential markets and rival countries to Thai entrepreneurs so that they can properly prepare production and marketing strategies. Governmental and private organizations concerned can also use the information for short-term and long-term plans of the promotion and development of the Thai gem and jewelry industry.



Consultancy and Information Support:


The Information Center is willing to answer questions about gem and jewelry, particularly, questions about marketing, and/or recommend sources of information for governmental and private authorities concerned, Thai gem and jewelry entrepreneurs, students and those interested. The services include answering questions via phone and email as well as providing information to support trade policy planning, marketing activities together with academic works.
