Semi Precious Stone Hessonite

The Hessonite is a variety of grossularite, the calcium silicate member of the garnet family. The unique cinnamon color gemstone is considered to be the birthstone for the month of January. The stone gets its name from the Greek word "hesson", which means inferior, since the stone has poor density and hardness compared to other garnets. It is also known as "cinnamon stone", owing to its distinct honey yellow to brown red cinnamon color.

Nature of the gemstone:
It has a typical cubic crystal structure that resembles that of a twelve sided dice. The most remarkable quality of the gemstone is that it has exceptionally high refractive index. The trace of manganese renders a distinct yellowish orange color to the stone with tiny honey colored inclusions. The diaphaneity of the stone varies from transparent to translucent. Though brittle tenacity of the stone restricts its usage, it is known for its brilliance. Unlike other garnets, it is not subjected to any of the chemical treatments, in order to enhance its physical properties. It has indistinct cleavage with refractive index ranging from 1.734-1.759. The gemstone does not show any fluorescence and it lacks double refraction. Oval and cushion are the common shapes; sometimes it is also available even in pear and emerald shape.
