Semi Precious Stone Onyx

The silicate mineral onyx is a parallel banded variety of chalcedony. It has a unique black color with white streak like inclusions and its name is derived from the Greek word "onux", meaning fingernail or claw. Sardonyx is a variant in which parallel bands are in shades of red rather than traditional black. The gemstone is usually cut into cabochons or beads and the eye catching gem is widely used in jewelry industry.

The sleek gem has distinct black base and white upper layer with parallel banding. Whereas the sardonyx is available in wide range of color that includes red, brown and other fancy colors. With uniaxial optical properties, it has a refractive index ranging from 1.530-1.543. Gemstone cleaning:
The onyx must be cleaned by using soft cloth and warm water. In case of using soap, make sure that the soap is mild and the soapy residues are properly removed. Avoid direct contact with sunlight and harsh chemicals, in order to protect the luster of the stone. It is much recommended to wrap the gem with silk cloth, before placing it in fabric lined wooden box.
