Sardonyx is a variant of onyx that belongs to the family of chalcedony, a silicate mineral. The colorful banded appearance of the gemstone is due to the stacking of tiny quartz fibers. The alluring gem derives its name from Greek words "sard", meaning reddish brown, and "onyx", which means "veined gem". The stone is well known, not only for its elegance but also for its reliability and affordability. In ancient times, Roman soldiers wore these rings, in order to enhance their courage and will power.
Nature of the gemstone:
Sardonyx is a unique variety of onyx with mesmerizing reddish brown layers and alluring white banding. Due to this significant property, the stone found its way in the carvings of cameos and intaglios. The stone closely resembles carnelian, the only difference is that its color is slightly darker than carnelian. The immense hardness of the stone is due to its fibrous nature and cubic crystal system. The translucent diaphaneity, exceptional clarity and brilliance of the gemstone make it popular in jewelry making industries. Unlike other gemstones, hot wax does not stick to this alluring stone.

The stone is formed as a result of contact metamorphism and it is highly found underneath hard metamorphic and igneous rocks. Some common sources of this amazing sparkling stone include Brazil, India, Sri Lanka, Madagascar and Kenya.
