Agate Necklace

Agate is the term practical not to a distinct mineral species, but also to a collective of various forms of silica, chiefly ChalcedonyAgate Necklace. According to Theophrastus the agate was named from the river Achates, in Sicily, where these gravel were first found. Most agates occur as nodules in eruptive rocks, and very old lavas, where they stand for cavities originally produced by the disengagement of a vapor in the molten mass, and then since filled, completely and partly, by siliceous matter deposited in usual layers upon the walls. Such agates, when cut transversely, exhibit a series of parallel lines, often of great tenacity, giving a banded look to the section; whence such gem stones are known as with stripes agate, rebind agate and striped agate.
