The field studies which form the basis of this report were made by the writer during July and August, 1906, under the general supervision of George Otis Smith, of the United States Geological Survey. Lee, state geologist of Maine, at the time the field work for this report was done, and the cordial cooperation of many persons interested in the deposits concerned, without whose aid these studies, would not have been possible.

The granite-pegmatites, in which are found feldspar, quartz, mica, and gem minerals, are composed of the same mineral constituents as the ordinary granites of the State, and differ from these principally in their greater coarseness and in their very uneven texture.
