  • The term emerald derives from the Latin smaragdus, via Greek smarados. Its original source is being a Semitic word izmargad or Sanskrit word, marakata meaning emerald or green.
  • The value of the precious stone emerald is graded using four basic parameters color, cuts, clarity and crystals.
  • Colombia is the world's largest producer of emerald which provides more than 60% of global production. Emerald's major occurrences are India, Australia, Austria, Pakistan, United States, Canada, Russia, South Africa, Brazil and some parts of Asian countries.
  • It is regarded as traditional birthstone for May and traditional gemstones for astrological signs of Taurus, Cancer and Gemini.
  • Emerald is rewarded as a traditional gift stone for 55th wedding anniversary and also used as 20th and 35th wedding anniversary stone.
  • Cleopatra prized emeralds all above other gemstonesand the first recorded emerald mines are famous Cleopatra mines rediscovered in 1818 in northern Egypt.
