New York gem dealer and author Benjamin Zucker would talk about Elihu Yale at the Conference of the Gemological Association of Great Britain (Gem-A) in November.
Yale is well known as the Founder of the University, which bears his name, but few know that he was a Welshman, which also joined the East India Company and then rose to become the President in Madras in the later seventeenth century with a penchant for selling diamonds – and not always with the authorities’ blessing. Benjamin’s talk would also discuss Yale’s dealings in the framework of the diamond trade at the time.
