GREENLAND - Vancouver's TRUE NORTH GEMS says it uncovered possibly the largest ruby in the northwestern hemisphere at its Fiskenaesset project in 2005. The gemstone weighs up in at 440 ct in its rough state.
Canadian master gemstone cut Thomas McPhee was commissioned to cut the stone, the first ever Greenland ruby so worked. He spent more than 10 months constantly carving a scene of mermaids and fishermen into the stone. The finished carving weighs 302 ct and has been valued at about $500,000.
Photos of both the rough as well as finished carving might be viewed at www.TrueNorthGems.com.
