Gem show attracts crowds from far and near

All that glitters is available here in Tucson as the first week of the 53rd annual Gem, Mineral, and Fossil Showcase wraps up.

People from across the country and all over the globe converge on the city at this time of year. They sell all that is unique jewelry and gems, to dinosaur bones and fossils.

Tucson’s gem show is the biggest display of its kind in the world, bringing millions of dollars into Tucson’s monitory, and it’s not only the classically money-makers that are benefiting.

Having stones on the head is not a bad thing at all, at the least, not for gemologist K.N. Moorthy. The 69-year-old really loves gems, and takes every chance to share his passion for them. His home is evidence to his interest, with every accessible space and corner crammed with different types of stones, rocks and gems.

“My curiosity in gems was sparked by an event in my childhood. I was bitten by a centipede while I was sleeping and in great pain. My father, who used to wear many rings with stones on them, took one off and wiped it on the wound. And the pain stopped”.
