SAN FRANCISCO - "Masterpieces of French Jewelry," opened today at the Legion of Honor for a four-month run, is amazingly, pleasantly more than simply a show of beautiful gems and precious metal ("not that there is anything wrong with that"). This is an airy, elegant matrix of the art of jewels and gemstones, grouped by periods and styles — decorations and ornaments accessible in the milieu of their time, in a chronological sequence.
