Gold exhibition to arrive in Washington

A collection of gold coins from Afghanistan are to be exhibited at the National Gallery of Art in Washington.

On display will be a gold aureus of Tiberius, Emperor of Rome, which is the oldest Roman coin to have been found in Afghanistan.

A first-century B.C gold medallion from India, which depicts a lion on one side, will also be on view at the exhibition along with a semi-circular gold ingot.

The collection, which will be on display until September, was organised by the National Museum of Afghanistan and the National Geographic Society.

Some 228 artifacts will be on display in the museum and range in date from 2200 BC to AD 200.

The US museum said: "Many of the objects were long thought to have been stolen or destroyed during some 25 years of conflict until they were dramatically recovered from a vault under the Presidential Palace in 2004."
