Ancient gold ring found in Scotland

A 700-year-old ring has been found on a Scottish farm, according to the Glasgow Daily Record.

Gordon Innes, a tanker driver and amateur historian, was metal detecting when he came across the 13th century bishop's consecration ring.

The 'cabochan' ring is made of gold and has sapphires and is the first of its kind to be found in Scotland. It has not been valued yet.

The newspaper said that by law the Crown owns all treasure discovered in Scotland and so any discoveries must be handed over for valuation. Mr Innes should be rewarded with a finders-fee based on the current market value.

Mr Innes said: "The best reward will be to see it in the National Museum."

Earlier this month Celtic coins discovered by a metal detector in Kent were auctioned off for £35,000, according to the Press Association. A total of 41 first century coins were discovered, and one sold for a record breaking £12,075 to a New York dealer.
