Diamonds Exhibit at Cooper-Hewitt Design Museum

A new exhibit dedicated to the diamond jewelry designs of the revered Van Cleef & Arpels jewelry house has opened at New York’s Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum.

“Set in Style: The Jewelry of Van Cleef & Arpels” features millions of dollars’ value of jewels, some of which were shaped from the jewelers’ vaults and some of which were lent to the appearance by private collectors.

The exhibit is organized in six sections, and the one that is creating the main buzz is the “personalities” collection, which features iconic pieces such as Princess Grace’s diamond tiara and a ruby bracelet that belonged to Marlene Dietrich.

Quantities of unique jewelry creations, such as a functioning zipper necklace crafted in precious metals and encrusted with gemstones, are also being shown.

Cooper-Hewitt Director Sarah Coffin said, that all piece on display in the exhibition “starts with a story.”

“Set in Style: The Jewelry of Van Cleef & Arpels” runs during June 5, 2011.

Former employee blamed for $400,000 in jewelry

BILOXI — Police Detective Michael Shaw said, a former employee of Harris Jewelry & Electronics is accused of embezzling $400,000 in jewelry.

He said, More than 500 pieces of jewels are missing.

The company is in Edgewater Shopping mall.

Police arrested Mateya Rejane Perez, 23, on embezzlement blame Wednesday afternoon.

Shaw said, the business called police after an audit in December showed discrepancies from the last month.

Detectives dogged the jewelry was taken over 10 to 12 months.

“All kinds of jewelry moved out and we don’t know where it went,” Shaw said. “Either it was taken and sold for cash or she had help, She may not have done it alone.”

Perez, of Shore Lark Street in Gulfport, was booked at the Harrison County prison on $75,000 bond set by Justice Court Judge Bruce Strong.

The case remains under investigation and could lead to other arrests, Shaw said. A single count is punished by up to 10 years in prison.

USA to spend on diamonds this Valentine’s Day, Reports DNA

After an increase in diamond sales over Christmas, it would show that the diamond industry can also expect a successful Valentine’s season, reports DNA.


The National Retail Federation (NRF) has expected a 17% increase in US diamond jewellery sales this coming Valentine’s Day, compared with those of last year.

Certainly US consumers are expected to spend a huge US$3.5 billion on their diamonds this year, up from US$3billion in 2010.

The USA are the biggest shopper of diamonds in the world and it is thought that diamond jewellery will be the most popular gift choice for Americans this coming February 14th.
