Padmanabhaswamy temple jewels stolen, says report

A good part of the precious jewels in the Sree Padmanabha Swamy temple’s store of wealth had been stolen and some were gravely damaged.

This surprising revelation was made in the story of the advocate commissioners, deputed by the Thiruvananthapuram principal sub judge in 2008 to open the underground chambers of the temple and take out pooja utensils for the yearly Alpasi festival.

The commissioners, who opened two chambers, namely the Vyasarcone Kallara and Nithyadi Ara, found that 14 green colored stones of the thankakkuda, a golden umbrella with hanging tassels made of gold and green stones, were not working. Some of the clothes were missing. There were cracks in the umbrella, also.

Also, 44 golden hooks of vellippidyswarnakkuda, the golden umbrella with silver handle, were set up missing.

Instead these were replaced by hooks prepared of other metals.

The mulapalika with complicated designs and carvings had also developed cracks.

Two of the four silver bells of the kumbheeyam were also missing.

The commissioners suggested that the 11 gold articles stored inside the nila anki koottam, a big wooden box, should be weighed and numbered.

They also wanted the chaturbahi anki, a golden model of the deity used for processions, to be weighed for safety reasons.

The report states that the palace delegate and their lawyer had strongly conflicting a move to take the sample weight of one item in every category.

De Beers diamond announced their sales up by 33 per cent

World famous De Beers Diamonds has announced that sustained retail demand from India and China and stronger than expected demand in the US have resulted in a record first half sales for irregular diamonds.

According to De Beers, sales of rough diamonds throughout the first half of 2011 enlarged 33 percent, year over year, to US$3.5 billion (AUD$31.68 billion). The company has established record sales figures for the first half of the year.

“Sales during the period have been outstanding, driven mostly by continual growth in the Middle East, Indian and Asian sell markets and their force on rough price growth,” De Beers said in a report.

The mining giant, which claims to manufacture more than a third of the world’s rough diamonds, also reported proof EBITDA of almost US$1.2 billion (AUD$1.089 billion) a 55 per cent increase over the first the first half of 2010, sparkly the impact of “excellent” price growth during the period ended June 30.

It predicts nonstop require for the remainder of 2011.

“Sales throughout the period have been exceptional, driven mainly by constant growth in the Middle East, Indian and Asian retail markets and their impact on rough price growth,” De Beers said in a statement.

De Beers also commented that in spite of the ongoing turmoil with the worldwide economy, it was encouraged by the continued strong growth in price and demand during the first six months of 2011.

According to Lonn Miller from Miller Diamonds, order for diamonds in Australia has steadily increased since the start of the year and he says, “there are severe shortages in the market” as a result of this increased demand.

The next thing the market has to observe then is the fluctuations in the Australian dollar.

Gold, Diamonds Valued at $20 Billion Unearthed at SouthernIndian Temple

Gold coins, diamonds and other precious stones revealed in vaults at a Hindu temple in southern India may be value $20 billion, officials said as they ready to open two more underground chambers at the site.

Bags of diamonds, an 18 foot gold necklace and 19 kilograms (42 pounds) of gold coins are with the items found so far, according to the website of the Sree Padmanabhaswamy Temple in Kerala. The vaults were opened once a local lawyer asked the courts to take store of what was in the temple amid accusations that it was being mismanaged.

“These vaults haven’t been opened for well more a hundred years,” said Ananda Padmanabhan, an attorney representing Sundara Rajan, who brought the case to court. “It consists of all from gold chains and ornaments, coins, and statues of gods and goddesses.”

The temple is run by a trust restricted by descendants of the royal family of Travancore, who ruled an area that is now part of southern Kerala state waiting after the country gained independence from the British in 1947. The treasure is consideration to have been given to the temple by the royal family, the Times of India reported.

The Kerala government has deployed a 24 hour police existence in and around the 16th century temple following the discovery. Other items in the opened vaults take in gold ropes, and antique jewelry studded with diamonds and emeralds, according to the temple’s website.

Kerala’s chief minister, Oommen Chandy, said the treasure will stay in the temple and won’t be sold off as a argue begins about what to do with the haul.

Diamond Rings Sell for Millions at Christie’s New York Auction

Diamond rings were the top selling lots at Christie’s key Jewels Auction in New York on Tuesday, with two stick out jewels fetching over $1 million each.

The star sale was a ring with a 46.51 carat oval-cut middle stone flanked by two 1 carat pearl shaped diamonds.

The jewel, set in platinum, was knocked down for $4,226,500 a per carat price of nearly $91,000.

Another diamond and platinum ring, set with a 10.01 carat diamond and two slighter pearl shaped diamonds, went for $1,314,500.

A 19.22 carat emerald cut yellow diamond ring with a color grade of Fancy Light Yellow flanked by two trilliant cut diamonds sold for $458,500, and a colorless 10.42 carat emerald cut diamond ring was knocked down for $422,500.

While diamond rings dominated the sale, other jewels as well performed well, such as the pair of square cut yellow diamond earrings weighing over 17 carats each set in gold and platinum fetched $722,500.

In total, the Christie’s New York significant Jewels Sale brought earned over $11.7 million.
