Tata Motors’ Nano may not be set the small car market on fire but there is no question that there is a lot of glitter.

The company has just unveiled the Gold plus Nano, a one off showpiece product that sees the car covered with 80kg of 22 carat gold, 15kg of sliver and 10,000 semi precious stones and precious stones.

This is indeed not the “people’s car” that Tata Motors had announced with much big deal a couple of years ago, but the Gold plus is certain to catch everyone’s eyes.

The car was revealed at Tata Theatre in Mumbai by Ratan Tata, chairman of Tata Group.
Today, gold is priced at Rs 28,147 per 10 grams and with over 80 kg of the yellow metal used to decorate the Nano, it is precious.

The gold only would be worth $4.68 million.

Gold plus is a Tata owned jewellery chain that was accountable for this gold enclosed Nano. The car was crafted to celebrate 5,000 years of jewellery making in India.

This car will be on exhibit at some of the company’s showrooms for the next six months wherever viewers can get a look at this show of opulence. But no test drives, please.

A good part of the precious jewels in the Sree Padmanabha Swamy temple’s store of wealth had been stolen and some were gravely damaged.

This surprising revelation was made in the story of the advocate commissioners, deputed by the Thiruvananthapuram principal sub judge in 2008 to open the underground chambers of the temple and take out pooja utensils for the yearly Alpasi festival.

The commissioners, who opened two chambers, namely the Vyasarcone Kallara and Nithyadi Ara, found that 14 green colored stones of the thankakkuda, a golden umbrella with hanging tassels made of gold and green stones, were not working. Some of the clothes were missing. There were cracks in the umbrella, also.

Also, 44 golden hooks of vellippidyswarnakkuda, the golden umbrella with silver handle, were set up missing.

Instead these were replaced by hooks prepared of other metals.

The mulapalika with complicated designs and carvings had also developed cracks.

Two of the four silver bells of the kumbheeyam were also missing.

The commissioners suggested that the 11 gold articles stored inside the nila anki koottam, a big wooden box, should be weighed and numbered.

They also wanted the chaturbahi anki, a golden model of the deity used for processions, to be weighed for safety reasons.

The report states that the palace delegate and their lawyer had strongly conflicting a move to take the sample weight of one item in every category.

Gold coins, diamonds and other precious stones revealed in vaults at a Hindu temple in southern India may be value $20 billion, officials said as they ready to open two more underground chambers at the site.

Bags of diamonds, an 18 foot gold necklace and 19 kilograms (42 pounds) of gold coins are with the items found so far, according to the website of the Sree Padmanabhaswamy Temple in Kerala. The vaults were opened once a local lawyer asked the courts to take store of what was in the temple amid accusations that it was being mismanaged.

“These vaults haven’t been opened for well more a hundred years,” said Ananda Padmanabhan, an attorney representing Sundara Rajan, who brought the case to court. “It consists of all from gold chains and ornaments, coins, and statues of gods and goddesses.”

The temple is run by a trust restricted by descendants of the royal family of Travancore, who ruled an area that is now part of southern Kerala state waiting after the country gained independence from the British in 1947. The treasure is consideration to have been given to the temple by the royal family, the Times of India reported.

The Kerala government has deployed a 24 hour police existence in and around the 16th century temple following the discovery. Other items in the opened vaults take in gold ropes, and antique jewelry studded with diamonds and emeralds, according to the temple’s website.

December 2010 saw an 8% drop in India’s exports of gold jewelry while exports of refined diamonds and total gem and jewelry exports rose considerably, Commodity Online reports.

According to beginning data from the country’s Gem and Jewellery Exporters Association, India exported $498 million worth of gold jewelry in December, compared to $541.63 million in the equivalent month of 2009.

However, the country’s total exports of gemstones and jewelry for December 2010 stood at $3.3 billion more than 70% higher than the $1.93 billion exported in December 2009.

December 2010 also saw a 91.48% flow in India’s exports of cut and polished diamonds – $2.49 billion compared to $1.3 billion in December 2009. Exports of colored gemstones were also up, although more modestly, and comprised $17.46 million compared to $15.12 million a year ago.
