Semi Precious Stone Pearl

A pearl is a very hard, rounded secretion formed inside the shell of certain bivalve mollusks. As a response to an irritating object inside its shell, the mollusk would deposit layers of calcium carbonate (CaCO3) in the form of the minerals aragonite and calcite (crystalline forms of calcium carbonate) held together by an organic horn-like compound known as conch Olin.
