Because of its low cost, toughness, and its close visual similarity
to diamond,
synthetic cubic zirconia has always remained
the most in nature and also inexpensively important diamond
stimulant since 1976. Its main competition as a artificial gemstone
is the more recently cultivated material moissanite.
Since 1891 the yellowish, monoclinic stone baddeleyite
has been an only usual form of zirconium oxide known. Being of
rare incidence it always had less economic importance.
