Glittering Stones
Pumpkin Diamond,

The unusual pumpkin stone was discovered in South Africa, in 1997. Ronald Winston purchased the stone, one day before the Halloween day and christened it as "pumpkin", since the vivid orange color of the diamond resembles the color of a cut pumpkin. The Gemological institute of America (GIA) rated the color of the stone as vivid orange and reported that it is a unique diamond, when compared to other colored diamonds because of its light colored and highly intense nature.

Qualities of fancy pumpkin stones :

The diamond is a fancy vivid orange, cushion cut stone, weighing 5.54 carats. In spite of its tiny size, the rare color grade makes the sparking stone one of the "rarest of the rare" among naturally colored stones. The fancy orange color of the diamond is due to the scattering of nitrogen as single atoms throughout the cubic structure of the diamond. The visible blue light of the spectrum is absorbed by the loose nitrogen atoms and emits canary yellow fluorescence. Most of the colored diamonds belongs to type I group due to the presence of nitrogen impurities. The pumpkin diamond also falls under the category of type I diamond with the combined features of rarity and exclusivity.

Journey of the diamond :

The rare stone was earthed in the alluvial deposits of South Africa, in 1997. The original owner of this stone is believed to be an unnamed farmer. Later, it found its way to William Goldberg Diamond Corporation, where it is cut and polished to its current size. After grading the color and quality of the stone by GIA (gemological institute of America), it got featured in an auction, at New York. On October 30, 1997, Ronald Winston, from the house of Harry Winston purchased this glittering wonder by paying a huge sum of $1.3 million dollars and christened the unnamed orange diamond as "pumpkin diamond". The last transaction of this diamond was made in the year 2005; an anonymous buyer purchased the precious stone for a price of $3 million dollars.
